Our athletes will show the world what India is all about: PM at Run for Rio

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed confidence in the country’s Rio Olympics-bound contingent, saying, “Our athletes will show the world what India is about.” The games begin August 5 “Contestants from all over the world will be there. But eyes of over 1.25 billion Indians will be on you,” the PM said in his message to the athletes while flagging off ‘Run for Rio’ event at the city’s Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. Indian squad has already left for Olympics. “Our athletes will win the hearts of the world and will show the world what India is about, I am sure about it,” he said. The Prime Minister’s message comes at a time when two of India’s players have tested positive for banned substances, virtually ruling them out of the games and dealing a blow to the country’s medal hopes. India has barely registered its presence at the world’s biggest sporting event and Modi wants it to change. “There are over 600 districts in the country. When the 2020 games t

Ashwin to Dragons, Vijay to Kings, Karthik to Patriots…

From a pool of 888 players, 151 were picked by the eight teams in the draft process for the inaugural edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) on Saturday. The tournament will kick off on August 27 with matches at Dindigul and Chennai. The Thoothukudi franchise, as the highest bidder, started the proceedings, picking wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik. The south Chennai side snapped up experienced T20 player R. Satish. The Coimbatore franchise went for M. Vijay, the first among the current Indian players to be roped in. R. Ashwin was chosen by Dindigul. The teams employed different strategies in the first two to three rounds, with most opting for a mix of all-rounders and batsmen. Dindigul Dragons, however, preferred to fill its bowling slots first. After R. Ashwin, the side added M. Ashwin and left-arm medium-pacer T. Natarajan to its line-up. Tuti Patriots made the best use of the advantage of picking first, selecting three players who have represented the c

Very proud to be Virat Kohli of the bowling line-up: Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin bagged his second straight five-wicket haul as India bundled out West Indies for 196 on the first day of the second Test in Jamaica on Saturday. Ashwin finished with 5 for 52 to bag his 18th five-wicket haul in only his 34th Test match, a stat that suggests his frequency of taking five-wicket hauls is better than Sri Lanka great Muttiah Muralitharan. (Day 1 Highlights) An elated Ashwin was satisfied with his performance today and said he wants to pick five-fors in every game. "I will be very proud to say that, I'll probably like to be the Virat Kohli of the bowling line-up that's the kind of benchmark you want to set for the team. He wants to turn up every game and tries to push on the benchmark. That's how a bowler should think. It's very difficult to get five-wicket hauls every game but that's what we should aim for," Ashwin said after the day's play. (Also Read: Viv Richards wants Marlon Samuels to prolong Test career)

Authorities were trying on Saturday to rescue people stranded in flooded areas after a week of heavy rain killed at least 52 people and uprooted thousands of others from their homes in Assam and Bihar. Twenty-six deaths have been reported in Assam, where incessant downpours have damaged roads and snapped telephone cables in several districts, a government statement said. Home minister Rajnath Singh flew over the worst-hit Assam areas on Saturday and said the floods were “very serious.” Singh said at least 28 districts of the state have been affected by floods. The Home Minister said he had asked the state government to “adequately utilise the money in the National Disaster Relief Fund.” Twenty-six deaths also have been reported in

Vietnam: Flight information screens at two major airports hacked

Screens displaying flight information and the public address system at Vietnam’s two major airports were hacked with derogatory messages against Vietnam and the Philippines in their territorial row against China in the South China Sea. After the hacking Friday evening, authorities switched off the screens and the sound systems at Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport and the Tan Son Nhat airport in southern Ho Chi Minh City, the online VnExpress said. The website of the national carrier, Vietnam Airlines, was also briefly hacked, it said. The site quoted Vice Minister of Transport Nguyen Nhat as saying the incidents did not affect the security or air traffic control at the airports. The messages and screenshots with derogatory remarks suggested they were purportedly left by Chinese hackers. Earlier this month, an international tribunal issued a ruling in favor of the Philippines that invalidated China’s sweeping claims in the South China Sea. Vietnam also has overlapping claims to parts of the

You have sacrificed nothing': Dad of slain Muslim soldier rebukes Donald Trump

HIGHLIGHTS On Trump's call to ban Muslims from US, Khizr Khan, whose son died in the Iraq War He said that the graves of the patriots at Arlington are from all faiths, genders and ethnicities WASHINGTON: The father of a US soldier of Pakistani origin provided one of emotional high points of the Democratic convention in Philadelphia when he repudiated  Donald Trump  's call to ban Muslims from entering America by citing the sacrifice his son made to defend the country's ideals. In a moment of quiet dignity that was received with a rapturous ovation, Khizr Khan, whose son died in the Iraq War, pulled out a copy of the U.S Constitution from his pocket during a short speech endorsing Hillary Clinton, to ask Trump if he had ever read it. ''Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery?'' he asked. ''Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. WhatsApp is retaining and storing chat logs even after the user deletes those chats

WhatsApp is retaining and storing chat logs even after the user deletes those chats WhatsApp is not fully deleting your chats even after you delete your chats from the app, says a new post by iOS researcher Jonathan Zdziarski. Zdziarski claims to have examined the disk images take from the latest version of the app where he found the app retaining traces of chat logs even after its being deleted. WhatsApp recently activated end-to-end encryption but it seems the data is still very much exposed to anyone with physical access to the device. Zdziarski further notes in his report that the data can be recovered using any remote backup systems. In his research, Jonathan Zdziarski found that the data is deleted by the app but it is never overwritten. Zdziarski considers use of SQLite library used in coding the app as the reason behind for app default. He says forensic trace is common among any application that uses SQLite, since it does not overwrite data by default.

My first experience with ban came when I was 12 years old. I was obsessed with what was known then as “trump cards” – playing cards with details of popular WWE wrestlers on the flip side. Internet had just started penetrating India and speeds were just a trickle – in the absence of all-consuming social media, my friends and I spend afternoons playing the game, comparing and checking wrestlers’ stats and pushing pressing home work aside. Exasperated, our parents formed a cabal and took away our cards, threatening to ban the game if we didn’t get back to studies. More than a decade later, Pokemon Go is a rush of déjà vu – thousands of people, mostly young, spending hours outside work, schools and colleges chasing mythical creatures, walking along familiar and unfamiliar roads, parks, entering buildings and cemeteries. The biggest craze in decades has whooshed past Twitter and Snapchat in popularity has also attracted notoriety. People have entered homes, frolicked in holocaust
